How does hyundai sonata handle in snow

I drive a Hyundai Sonata Hybrid - decent on gas mileage, but it has a few quirks. Like most hybrids it does not accelerate quickly, or if it does accelerate quickly it is after a short delay. Those few seconds waiting for your car to react can be a nightmare while merging into heavy Boston rush hour traffic.

Another downside to the hybrid is the regenerative breaking. The two types of braking are very different and take some getting used to.

So how does this all play into winter driving? It takes some getting used to, when you don't have the right tires! I bought my car in November of and thought that the brand new all-season tires would get me through the winter - was I ever wrong The first snow of the winter was only about two inches and yet it was enough to clog up my all season tires.

That, coupled with the fact that I had accelerated too much due to the hybrid finally kicking into a lower gear and the regenerative braking not slowing my car as fast as I thought it would, caused my Sonata and I to slide through a four way intersection with a red light! Luckily, it was later in the evening and there were very few cars on the road, but it was enough of a scare to get me to invest in winter tires for this car.

We'll see if the studded Hakkapeliittas can live up to their reputation when they're combined with my car, heavy traffic, and poorly plowed roads - Bring on the Snow!! The new Nordic non-studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 winter tire has the perfect balance of safety and comfort. A large This can be used to control various vehicle functions and also display user content via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

A premium Bose sound system accompanies this screen. The driver will have all of the relevant information displayed on an expansive The car comes equipped with a number of airbags and also knee and side air curtains to maximize safety.

Nevertheless, it has a number of driving modes to choose from, each geared to perform a different way, whether that is to improve fuel economy, comfort, or handling and performance. Even though the Sonata has a decent 5. Some drivers have reported being able to drive in deeper snow, having outfitted their cars with after-market wheels and tires that somewhat raise ground clearance. Furthermore, the Anti-Lock Brakes and traction control work great and keep you out of trouble on most wet roads you might encounter.

Advanced technology allows for a less warm-up time when you first start the car up, and a cool remote start feature enables you to warm up the engine and the interior well before you even get inside.

So you can rest easy, knowing that you will be covered under warranty if there are any engine issues. Drivers have reported that while the Sonata is able to drive on ice, it is only at a very low speed. Anything higher than a few miles an hour, and you will start to feel the car slipping and losing grip.

In such cases, you must put on some dedicated snow tires or ice chains. Unfortunately, even winter tires will not be ideal as the ice can be quite treacherous. In a pinch, you can probably get away with driving very slowly with traction control turned all the way on, but this is still not recommended.

Keeping the specific features and specifications of the Sonata in mind, it is our opinion that the most recent model year i. The neatest gimmick is the Blind-Spot View Monitor — side cameras that watch overtaking cars in the lanes to your side.

Flick the turn signals and you get a camera view of the side and back of your car in the gauge cluster display, all without cocking your head to the side. The killer app, though, is Remote Smart Parking Assist , which will move your Sonata 10 metres forward or back, into or out of a parking space or garage.

And even if you left the wheels cocked when you shut the Sonata down, the system will straighten the wheels before parking. The distance the car will travel means that this is not complete self-parking, but it does allow you to park in tight spots where you might not have been able to exit the car. And it will, of course, impress the neighbours.

None of which diminishes the new Sonata. This is arguably the best car in the family sedan segment and gets my vote for the prettiest, inside and out.
