It organizes the public into nine distinct groups, based on an analysis of their attitudes and values. Even in a polarized era, the survey reveals deep divisions in both partisan coalitions.
Use this tool to compare the groups on some key topics and their demographics. Pew Research Center now uses as the last birth year for Millennials in our work. President Michael Dimock explains why. About Pew Research Center Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes and trends shaping the world. It conducts public opinion polling, demographic research, media content analysis and other empirical social science research.
Pew Research Center does not take policy positions. Think, for a moment, about where you get your news. Maybe you leave for work each morning with black fingertips from the smudged ink of a newspaper. Maybe the dulcet delivery of your local NPR host is the only thing that gets you through your commute.
Or maybe, like half of American adults , you learn about the world through your television. Though its popularity is waning, TV news is still a big deal. For example, these three dots represent anchors from the three networks: Anderson Cooper, Lester Holt, and Tucker Carlson.
Since these names are used very frequently by their respective channels and rarely by the others, they sit very close to their own corner.
A word that is used about equally would end up in the middle. Here are the rest of the words. Though Hillary Clinton has made few public appearances following the election, she, her family, and events related to her campaign have still been a big news item on Fox. Storms slammed the southern United States and Puerto Rico, causing hundreds of deaths and billions of dollars in damages.
Dots are positioned based on proportion of uses of each word attributed to each channel. Ultimately, i dont trust any of them but fox is certainly the better of these prkpaganda outlets. They have never been caught falsifying and staging news in the ways that cnn has. People who say otherwise are simply not being objective but the footage doesnt lie.
That is a recipe for disaster and only a fool doesnt realize that. Just a few years ago those people preached border strengthening. My my how they flip. Dont get caught up in this dialectic, the establishment works from both sides.
This 2 party system is largly a dialectic facade to divide while obamas hug and kuss bushes like family. Rachel maddow was at a choked up loss for words over the children but claps for bombs in syria? Mccain forbid trump from his funeral but had henry kissinger of all evil, to memorialize him? Mccain, the man who cheated on his wife after she waited 5.
The man who physically assaulted numerous other politicians, lied about his time as a songbird in vietnam, lied about building a wall to be reelected in Az, then went back to his ways of writing and signing every amnesty bill that came his way. Opposed a mlk day until he ran for pres, oh and lets not forget, killed abt people on carrier when a bomb supposedly dropped from his plane, injuring another That man destroyed more planes than the vc id bet, and im not just referring to the carrier fire.
Well said Lisa! There is only one truth, and I am appalled that the news is embellished to the point that it is no longer the truth! I hate trump for all his lies, lack of empathy and just the ridiculous things he says, mostly the arrogance and the bold faced lies! Actually they show all sides. They have a program call CNN heroes.
It is a beautiful program. Also CNN tell all kinds of stories and it is much more diverse with all sorts of perspectives but I do believe that at times they embellish their stories but that does not mean it is completely fake. I believe in listening to all sides that is why I am more keen now to read news that it is more neurtal. I dont just watch or read news for shock value. I also dont read or watch news because I agree with it.
I believe in the going's ons in the world take it in and respond accordingly. I dont react. I have discernment and I believe in doing what is right. CNN began operating in the s, with an aim of "making news the star. Fox News was the newcomer, having launched in But since , it's been the highest-rated cable news channel in America.
CNN has always had a large editorial staff. In , it had 4, employees, the most out of any of its competitors. Fox News was the opposite. CNN had the ability to be on the ground, reporting. But its commentary felt forced. Its strength was in news. While Fox News's actual reporting, according to Mike Hoyt, a former editor of Columbia Journalism Review, was "a small island in a vast sea of very conservative commentary.
In February , Fox amped up the feud when it lashed out at CNN's claim that said it was the most trusted name in news. That was CNN's worst month in its recent history. In May , CNN reported its worst ratings in a decade. Holder was referring to a segment fought on Fox News for seven minutes, between liberal journalist Kirsten Powers and anchor Megyn Kelly, over alleged voter intimidation. In mid, CNN was experiencing one of its worst slumps ever. Fox News continued to rise.
It finished with an average of 2 million prime-time viewers. It's hard to miss the irony. Zucker wanted to revamp CNN from a tired news station into something entertaining.
He wanted to break up CNN's daytime programming, which ran together as an endless breaking news cycle. It was Zucker who brought back the tagline "this is CNN" as he tried to strengthen the network's identity. He wasn't afraid to break from the brand, either. Things were changing for Fox News in , too. One of the reasons for this change was that Ailes was concerned about its aging demographic.
In , commentators noticed Fox News was also putting more left-wing analysts on air. Another sign was former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's fall from favor.
Palin went on to start her own media organization. Across the divide, despite Zucker's changes, CNN's viewers were down to , in the primetime slot in In , CNN's news judgment was mocked for choosing to cover the White House Correspondent's dinner over protests for Freddie Gray, a black man who died while being held by police.
In , Fox News saw a glimmer of the future when Megyn Kelly grilled Trump over his past sexist comments. Trump responded by refusing to go back on Fox News. Fox News' management also reportedly killed a story about Trump's alleged affair with porn star Stormy Daniels, because Murdoch wanted Trump to win.
Then in , Trump was elected president. For CNN, Trump provided a focus for all of its breaking news talent. Yet CNN was heavily criticized for being one of the first major news outlets to give Trump a platform. For Fox, it started as a mutually-beneficial relationship.
Fox News and Trump seemed to be intertwined, and any claim that it wasn't "mainstream media" was hard to swallow, considering its popularity and its positioning close to the president. The changes were made even starker with the departure of Ailes.
Things continued to change for Fox News in Megan Kelly and Bill O'Reilly were out of the network. A revolving door between Trump's administration and Fox News became more and more pronounced. One key figure who helped keep the revolving door spinning was former Fox News executive Bill Shine, who was Trump's director of communications for eight months.
This clash between networks was becoming intense. These clashes showed that CNN was no longer defining itself by sitting in the middle of the political spectrum. Fox News didn't just attack CNN.
