Creator Maggie Friedman serves as showrunner and executive producer along with executive producers Katherine Heigl and Shawn Williamson. On September 21, Netflix announced the addition of four new characters, played by some of our favorite actors around. They are, per a press release:. An up-and-coming power player in the world of entertainment.
Justine Jordan is no-nonsense but always charming, the kind of person everyone wants in their corner—including Tully Hart. He's brash, ambitious, and sexy. Between its unique premise and unforgettable cast of characters, Firefly was generally a hit with both critics and viewers - at least those who saw it. The series maintains an incredibly loyal fanbase despite the fact that it was axed after only 11 of its 14 episodes were aired.
To this day, Browncoats everywhere continue to hope for its triumphant return and even Fox seems open to the idea of a Firefly revival. The film gave audiences closure, but most fans still wanted more - though star Nathan Fillion feels one season was enough. Fox was clearly hoping for the next Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel , and when Firefly failed to deliver that, the network lost faith pretty quickly.
According to Whedon on the show's DVD commentary, Firefly is "about nine people looking into the blackness of space and seeing nine different things. Despite being on Fox, Firefly had a couple things going for it Critics loved the show, for the most part. No matter how well-loved, every show has its detractors, and Firefly was no different. Some critics found the sci-fi and western mix forced and redundant.
The show even went on to win numerous awards , including an Emmy and two Saturns, not long after cancellation. Along with its critical praise, the show attracted a solid following. Like Buffy and Angel before it, Firefly developed a strong, dedicated fan base. While there's no official tally as to how many Browncoats exist, it's a pretty large number, and it probably continues to grow.
Unfortunately, the fan base wasn't large enough to halt cancellation, despite a concerted attempt to get the show picked up by another network and other series-saving tactics, according to Blastr. Still, this great show's abrupt ending should come as no surprise, considering what happened before the show even began production. In true executive producer fashion, the higher-ups at Fox almost ruined the show before production even began.
Fox told Whedon to nix their marriage, or they'd nix the deal. Sticking to his guns, Whedon told them also revealed in Firefly's DVD commentary , "Then don't pick up the show, because in my show, these people are married. Reboots and revivals continue to be all the rage, and quite a number of classic shows are making their returns to television such as Star Trek , The Twilight Zone , Lost in Space , Will and Grace , Rosanne , etc.
A reboot without the original cas, would be a bad idea and would almost certainly be rejected outright by the sci fi community. But is it even possible to bring back the original players at this stage? Nathan Fillion already has a new series in the works at ABC scheduled for next year. Morena Baccarin is currently working on Gotham , and several of the other actors have projects in the works.
Plus, Joss Whedon seems to be the go to superhero movie savior these days currently working on a Batgirl script. But then this crew tends to get together on a semi-regular basis at conventions and they always talk about how they would like to return to the show Fillion even suggested buying out the rights from FOX several years back. Whether it is the best move for the franchise remains to be seen. I consider a revival a very real possibility if Disney can get the principals together.
But would that just be a corporate money grab or would the magic still be there? Chime in with your thoughts in the comments section below. From Amazon.
